Der FireWire-Festplattenmodus, oder FireWire Target Disk Mode, hilft dabei Daten von einem Mac-System zu sichern, dass nach einem Absturz nicht mehr selbstständig startet. Hierbei wird die eingebaute Festplatte des Zielcomputers über FireWire bei einem anderen Computer (Host) als externe Festplatte eingebunden. Mit dem Host-Computer kann man dann auf das geschädigte System des Zielcomputers zugreifen und gegebenenfalls Fehler beseitigen oder eine Datensicherung durchführen.
Voraussetzung ist, dass Host– und Zielcomputer über eine FireWire-Schnittstelle verbunden sind. Beim Host-Computer muss es sich nicht zwangsläufig um einen Mac handeln. Vorausgesetzt ist aber, dass das System mit dem HFS+ Dateisystem von Apple umgehen kann. Lesezugriff ist unter Windows beispielsweise mit dem HFS Explorer möglich, unter Linux ist in der Regel das Paket hfsplus schon installiert. Durch einfaches mounten ist ist hier oft sogar Schreibzugriff möglich.
Ist der Zielcomputer ausgeschaltet und per FireWire-Kabel mit dem Host-Computer verbunden, kann das Zielsystem gestartet werden. Um in den Target Disk Mode zu gelangen muss man sofort nach dem Betätigen des Ein-/Ausschalters die T-Taste solange gedrückt halten, bis auf dem Bildschirm des Zielcomputers das FireWire Logo erscheint. Auf dem Host-Computer sollte die Festplatte dann eingebunden und im Finder zu finden sein. Jetzt können wichtige Daten gesichert oder Fehler behoben werden. Möchte man eine vollständige Kopie der eingebundenen Festplatte erstellen hilft das Programm Carbon Copy Cloner.
Wird die Festplatte nicht mehr benötigt, muss sie im Finder des Host-Computers ausgeworfen werden. Der Zielcomputer kann dann einfach durch erneutes Betätigen des Ein-/Ausschalters ausgeschaltet werden.
